HRCI Cert Prep is the certifying body’s own course, delivered on a BenchPrep platform since BenchPrep’s direct-to-consumer store closed in February 2024 — hrci.org is now the only official channel. Alignment with the exam is guaranteed by definition, the bundles include videos, flashcards, a study-plan tool, and full-length pre- and post-test practice exams, and — rare at this tier — there is a money-back guarantee if you don’t pass the first time. The $85 official Timed Practice Exam (50 questions) is the one purchase candidate communities endorse almost universally: the only source-of-truth question set on the market.

The value math is the problem. The base bundle runs $449 (a bundled promo against the $499 regular price), $499–$549 with the companion textbook, and $649–$699 with premium video — all for just 180 days of access, and HRCI doesn’t disclose how many practice questions you get. Reviews are genuinely polarized: aggregate review scraping puts HRCI around 2.8/5, with recurring complaints about a clunky, freezing platform and study material that didn’t resemble the exam, against defenders who say direct exam alignment justifies the cost.

Pocket Prep’s PHR bank holds 1,500 questions across all seven functional areas as of July 2026, with explanations that cite their source textbooks and three full-length mock exams included with Premium — unusual completeness for a drill app. The mobile experience remains the smoothest in this market: a daily 10-question habit loop, weakest-subject targeting, and build-your-own quizzes make five-minute study windows genuinely productive. Fifty questions are free to try, and at $49.99 for three months, the typical study window costs less than a single Exam Edge 10-pack.

What it is not is a course. There is no study guide, no video, and no curriculum, and the recurring candidate verdict is that its questions run easier and more recall-based than the scenario-heavy real exam. The subscription auto-renews — cancellation complaints appear on Trustpilot — and the pass guarantee is three additional free months of Premium, not money back. The honest role for Pocket Prep is the supplement it markets itself as, and at this price it is excellent in that role.

HRCP has prepared PHR and SPHR candidates for three decades and remains one of the few providers anywhere with a “You Pass or Your Money Back” guarantee — real, but gated: complete all practice exams at 80% or better and request the refund within 30 days of your exam. The program runs $270 online-only with audio, $375 print-only, or $480 for both, one-time, with roughly 2,150 practice questions across 17 practice exams, annual legal updates, and a separate 30-day satisfaction guarantee. HRCP itself says it hasn’t raised prices since 2007.

Two caveats temper the classic mid-price pick. The question bank and study units are shared across the PHR and SPHR (a SHRM edition exists too), so PHR-specific scenario depth is thinner than the raw count implies. And the unit structure still mirrors the pre-2024 topic list — one unit is still titled “Risk Management” — so verify coverage of the 2024 outline’s seven functional areas, especially the standalone Employee Engagement and HR Information Management domains, before you rely on it. Most glowing testimonials sit on HRCP’s own site.

HRStudyPro is the notable 2025–2026 newcomer: a $149 one-time Master Bundle with lifetime access and free updates, covering 1,350+ PHR questions mapped to the 2024 outline, seven study guides (one per functional area), 400+ flashcards across seven decks, and scenario-practice and missed-question modes. Its full-length practice exams match the real 115-question timed structure with domain-weighted breakdowns and unlimited randomized retakes, and an $89 practice-exams-only tier is a clean standalone mock buy. The founder, Kevin Byford, is an SPHR-credentialed HR director, and nothing here is a subscription.

The catch is that nobody independent has vetted it. As of July 2026 we found no Trustpilot page, no Reddit discussion, and no third-party review footprint at all — and the “best PHR prep” comparison articles blanketing search results, which consistently rank HRStudyPro first, are its own SEO content. There is no pass guarantee, only a 7-day money-back satisfaction window, no video content, no mobile app, and a single-founder operation carries support and longevity risk. Promising on paper; unproven where it counts.

Exam Edge sells volume: ten 100-question PHR practice tests for $99.50 one-time — up to 1,000 questions total — with a single test at $39.95 and five for $69.75. Each test is retakeable four times with explanations, the 5- and 10-packs add 100 flashcards and a study guide, and frequent sitewide promo codes push the effective price lower still. At roughly $0.10 per question from a long-operating, BBB-accredited company with no subscription attached, it is the cheapest bulk practice in this market.

The complaints cluster exactly where it matters. The most common theme across a polarized Trustpilot — roughly half 5-star against a heavy 1-star tail — is questions that feel over-simplified and unrepresentative of the actual exam, and Exam Edge writes tests for hundreds of certifications with no HR-credentialed author claims. Its tests run 100 questions against the real 115-question format, the advertised “100% Pass Guarantee” carries conditional terms kept on a separate page, and the permanent strikethrough “sale” pricing erodes trust. Cheap extra reps, not a study plan.

Mometrix University’s PHR course packs 1,030+ practice questions, eight full-length practice tests, 350+ flashcards, and 50+ lessons — real volume for candidates who calibrate confidence through repeated mocks. The better-loved Mometrix product, though, is the PHR Secrets Study Guide (2025–2026, 7th edition) at $31.99 as an ebook or $36.99 in print: a fixture as a budget content-review supplement with wide retail distribution. The free public Mometrix practice test is also a popular zero-risk starting point.

The course pricing is the deal-breaker. It costs $129.99 per month, auto-renewing — up sharply from the $49.99–$59.99 per month cited in 2024–2025 third-party reviews — so a typical 10–14 week study window runs about $390, more than HRCP’s entire program. Trustpilot complaints recur on two themes: buyers who didn’t realize they were starting a subscription, and cancellation flows that failed. Content is written by generalists rather than credentialed HR professionals, there is no pass guarantee, and the refund window is seven days.
