If you are applying to U.S. colleges from outside the United States, the ACT is still a viable admissions test — but the registration path, format, and fees differ from the U.S. experience. This guide is written specifically for the international market: what is the same, what is different, and how to avoid last-minute registration problems.
The enhanced ACT outside the US
The enhanced ACT did not roll out everywhere on the same day. For international test-takers, the change happened in two stages:
| Stage | Effective internationally | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| New composite score | September 2025 | Composite based on English, math, and reading only; science became optional and reported separately with a STEM score when taken. |
| Enhanced content and structure | February 2026 | Fewer questions, adjusted timing, four answer choices on math, and the improved test structure applied to international administrations. |
That means any international test you register for today uses the enhanced format. Your composite comes from English, math, and reading; science and writing are optional add-ons that do not affect the composite. For the full U.S.-format explanation, see our enhanced ACT guide.
Format differences: online only
The biggest format difference for international students is that the ACT is online only outside the U.S. ACT states directly that, for students outside the U.S., the ACT is only available online. You take the test on a computer at an authorized test center — either a device the center provides or, where offered, your own compatible device through the BYOD option.
This is not a remote at-home exam. You must go to a test center, and you should run the ACT device check and install ACT Gateway before test day if you are using your own device. For a deeper comparison of online versus paper ACT formats, see ACT online vs paper.
International online ACT uses the same section timing and question counts as the enhanced U.S. online ACT: English 50 questions in 35 minutes, math 45 questions in 50 minutes, reading 36 questions in 40 minutes, optional science 40 questions in 40 minutes, and optional writing 1 prompt in 40 minutes.
International dates and registration route
International registration is handled through global.act.org. You must create a free MyACT student account, then register online. ACT explicitly tells international students not to contact the test center in advance to sign up; seats and availability are shown inside the registration portal.
Current 2026–2027 international test dates from ACT’s official international schedule are below. Dates are testing windows; your specific session (morning or afternoon) depends on the test center.
| Test dates | Regular registration deadline | Late registration deadline | Photo upload deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 September 2026 | 7 August 2026 | 21 August 2026 | 21 August 2026 |
| 23–24 October 2026 | 25 September 2026 | 9 October 2026 | 9 October 2026 |
| 11–12 December 2026 | 13 November 2026 | 27 November 2026 | 27 November 2026 |
| 12–13 February 2027 | 15 January 2027 | 29 January 2027 | 29 January 2027 |
| 2–3 April 2027 | 5 March 2027 | 19 March 2027 | 19 March 2027 |
| 11–12 June 2027 | 14 May 2027 | 28 May 2027 | 28 May 2027 |
| 9–10 July 2027 | 11 June 2027 | 25 June 2027 | 25 June 2027 |
Not every country has a test center for every date. During registration you can view available test dates and centers by country. If no center in your country is scheduled for any date and there is no center within reasonable traveling distance, check ACT’s arranged-testing requirements through the registration portal.
International fees
International fees are separate from U.S. fees. The figures below are from ACT’s international fees page, checked October 2026.
| Fee type | Amount |
|---|---|
| Full ACT (no writing) | $186.50 |
| Full ACT with writing | $211.50 |
| Test option change (add/remove writing) | $25.00 |
| Late registration | $38.00 |
| Test date or test center change | $44.00 |
| Score reports to 5th and 6th college choices | $19.00 |
| Additional score reports (after registration) | $19.00 each |
If you are also comparing U.S. fees or fee-waiver rules, see ACT fees and fee waivers. Fee waivers are generally limited to U.S. students; international students should budget the full registration cost plus any change or late fees.
Preparation from outside the US
The good news is that the best official practice materials work worldwide. ACT publishes four free full-length enhanced practice tests — forms 25MC1, 25MC5, 26MC2, and 26MC3 — each with its own scoring key and conversion tables. These are the same forms used for U.S. preparation, and they match the current international online format. You can access them through our free ACT practice page or directly from ACT’s free test-prep hub.
Because the international test is online, practice in timed, screen-based conditions. If you plan to use your own device on test day, run the ACT device check early so you have time to resolve compatibility issues. Also plan the logistics: time zones, test-center location, identification requirements, and whether you need to arrive early for photo upload or check-in.
The ACT is an English-language test. Do not assume a translated version is available for your country. ACT provides some English-learner supports — translated test directions, bilingual dictionaries, and extended time — but these are designed for examinees in the U.S., U.S. territories, and Puerto Rico. If you need language or accessibility support for an international test date, contact ACT directly through the registration portal before registering.
