Registering for the BCBA exam is a two-vendor process. The BACB decides whether you are eligible to take the exam and collects the application fee. Pearson VUE delivers the exam and collects the appointment fee. Mixing up the two fees — or paying one and forgetting the other — is a common planning mistake. This guide walks through the real costs, the order of steps, and what to expect on test day.
The two-fee reality
Your total cost depends on whether this is your first attempt or a retake. The BACB charges a lower application fee for retakes, but the Pearson VUE appointment fee stays the same.
| Fee | Paid to | First attempt | Retake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application fee | BACB | $245 | $140 |
| Pearson VUE appointment fee | Pearson VUE | $125 | $125 |
| Total | — | $370 | $265 |
The $245 and $140 are BACB application fees. The $125 is a separate Pearson VUE appointment fee. You must pay both before you can sit for the exam. A retake requires a new application to the BACB and a new Pearson VUE appointment.
Amounts are in USD, checked October 3, 2026; applicable taxes may be added. These are the core exam fees only. They do not include prep materials, travel to a testing center, score-report reviews, or any required coursework and fieldwork costs that come before you apply.
Application to appointment: the steps
The path from eligibility to test day follows a fixed sequence. Skipping a step or doing them out of order will block your appointment.
- Create a BACB account. Use your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. If the names do not match, you will not be able to test. Use a personal email address you control long term.
- Submit your BCBA application. Apply through your BACB account under the eligibility pathway you have completed. Include required transcripts, fieldwork verification, and any other documentation. Pay the $245 application fee.
- Wait for BACB authorization. The BACB reviews your application and, if approved, authorizes you to test. You cannot schedule with Pearson VUE until this authorization is in your account.
- Schedule your Pearson VUE appointment. Sign in to your Pearson VUE account, select the BCBA exam, choose a testing center and date, and pay the $125 appointment fee.
- Confirm your appointment. Save the confirmation email and note the center address, arrival time, and cancellation deadline.
Authorization is generally valid for two years. During that window you may attempt the exam up to 8 times, with at least 30 days between attempts. Always verify your own authorization dates in your BACB account before scheduling.
If you are retaking, you must submit a new retake application to the BACB and receive a new authorization before you can pay Pearson VUE for another appointment. The 30-day wait is a minimum, not a recommendation about when you are ready.
Test-day checklist
The BCBA exam is delivered in person at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers. Plan to arrive early, travel buffer included, and bring only what the centers allow.
- Identification: Bring government-issued photo ID with a signature. The name must match your BACB account exactly. Check the current Pearson VUE ID policy for acceptable forms.
- Appointment confirmation: Bring or have accessible your Pearson VUE confirmation details, including appointment time and center address.
- Arrive early: Pearson VUE recommends arriving before your scheduled appointment to complete check-in. Late arrivals may be turned away.
- Personal items: Bags, phones, watches, notes, and most personal items are typically not allowed in the testing room. Lockers may be provided, but rules vary by center; confirm with your specific site.
- Format: The exam is 185 multiple-choice questions with 4 answer choices each, delivered over 4 hours on a computer.
The BCBA Handbook explicitly permits unscheduled breaks on your own time: the examination clock continues. Follow exit and re-entry security procedures. You may access food, drink, or medication as allowed, but not phones or study materials, and may not leave the building.
During the exam, read each question carefully but keep moving. With 185 questions and 4 hours, you have a little over one minute per question on average, leaving limited time for review. Flag uncertain questions and return only if time allows.
Rescheduling and no-show rules
Life happens, but Pearson VUE’s rescheduling rules are strict. Missing a deadline can cost you the appointment fee.
| Timeline | Action allowed | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 31 or more days before | Reschedule or cancel | No fee |
| 30 to 5 days before | Reschedule or cancel | Confirm the charge in Pearson VUE; official tables conflict |
| 5 days to 48 hours before | Reschedule or cancel | Confirm the charge in Pearson VUE; official tables conflict |
| Less than 48 hours before | Cannot reschedule or cancel | No refund |
A missed appointment forfeits the Pearson VUE scheduling fee. The June 2026 handbook says you can schedule another appointment in your Pearson VUE account within 24 hours and must pay the scheduling fee again. It does not classify a no-show as a failed examination requiring a BACB retake application.
Set an early reminder more than 31 days before testing. The BACB and Pearson pages disagree on the two within-30-day charges and are not fully consistent at the 30-day and five-day boundaries. Confirm the applicable deadline and charge through Pearson before submitting a change.
What to do next
Once your budget and timeline are set, shift your focus to readiness. Review the BCBA handbook, confirm your ID matches your BACB account, and run a final practice session under timed conditions.

Frequently asked questions
A first attempt costs $370: $245 to the BACB for your application and $125 to Pearson VUE for your appointment. A retake costs $265: $140 for the BACB retake application plus the $125 Pearson VUE appointment fee.
Both. The BACB collects the application fee when you apply for authorization. Pearson VUE collects the separate appointment fee when you schedule your test date and center.
Authorization is generally valid for two years. During that period you may attempt the exam up to 8 times, with at least 30 days between attempts. Check your exact authorization window in your BACB account.
Yes, through Pearson VUE, at least 48 hours before your appointment. Official BACB and Pearson tables disagree on the charges inside 30 days and on some boundary wording. Confirm the applicable deadline and fee in your Pearson account before submitting a change. Within 48 hours you cannot cancel or reschedule.
You forfeit the Pearson VUE scheduling fee. The current handbook says you can schedule a new appointment within 24 hours through Pearson VUE and pay that scheduling fee again. Follow the instructions for your authorization; a no-show is different from failing an exam.
Bring government-issued photo ID with a signature. The name must match your BACB account exactly. Check Pearson VUE's current ID policy and your appointment confirmation for acceptable forms and any additional requirements.
