If you are working toward BCBA certification, you have probably heard that something changes in 2027. The most important thing to understand is that the 2027 changes are eligibility, coursework, fieldwork, and maintenance changes. They are not a new exam edition. The current examination is built from the BACB sixth-edition Test Content Outline with 185 questions within a 4-hour session.
The January 1, 2027 line: by application date, not exam date
The relevant cutoff is receipt of a complete, approvable application. BACB’s 2026 transition notice specifies December 31, 2026 for the application, payment and all required documents to be received under the current requirements. Do not rely only on when you started the form or on your planned exam date.
| Your situation | Which requirements apply |
|---|---|
| BACB receives your complete application, payment and required documents by December 31, 2026 | Current BCBA eligibility requirements (the pathways, coursework, and fieldwork rules in effect before 2027). |
| You submit your BCBA application on or after January 1, 2027 | 2027 BCBA eligibility requirements: two pathways only, Pathway 2 coursework requirements and revised fieldwork rules, including 7.5% supervision for concentrated fieldwork. Maintenance requirements are separate from initial eligibility. |
| You are mid-fieldwork on January 1, 2027 | The application date controls. Hours accrued under current rules may still count if they meet the requirements in effect when you apply; confirm with the BACB how your specific hours and forms transfer. |
The eligibility transition is separate from the examination content outline. The current examination uses the sixth-edition outline; verify the handbook and any examination notices for your actual test date.
What changes on January 1, 2027
The BACB 2027 requirements update four main areas for new applicants and certificants. The table below summarizes the verified changes.
The 2027 handbook also changes monthly fieldwork parameters: 20–160 fieldwork hours per supervisory period, with cumulative client observation of 60 minutes for Supervised Fieldwork or 90 minutes for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. Supervision is 5% or 7.5% of that period’s fieldwork hours, respectively. These are selected changes, not the complete eligibility rules; use the full handbook and transition guide for forms and all other requirements.
| Area | What changes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility pathways | Reduced to two pathways. Pathways 3 and 4 are discontinued for applications submitted January 1, 2027 or later. | Candidates who previously planned to qualify through Pathway 3 or 4 must switch to Pathway 1 or 2 before applying. |
| Coursework | Pathway 2: 315 instructional hours with revised allocation and explicit attention to client-specific cultural, contextual, and personal variables in assessment/intervention and organizational behavior management. | Check that your course sequence matches the 2027 content allocation before applying. |
| Supervised fieldwork | Concentrated supervised fieldwork supervision requirement changes from 10% to 7.5%. | Candidates using concentrated supervision need to confirm the new percentage of fieldwork hours supervised within each monthly supervisory period and documentation. |
| Continuing education | The document restates the ethics CEU definition expanded in March 2025, including cultural/contextual responsiveness; this is not newly effective in 2027. | Certificants must verify that ethics CE events meet the expanded definition for recertification cycles affected by the change. |
Eligibility changes and examination requirements are separate
The 2027 requirements document refers to the sixth-edition Test Content Outline. The table below describes the current examination; confirm the handbook and examination requirements in effect when you schedule.
| Exam attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Total questions presented | 185 |
| Scored questions | 175 |
| Unscored questions | 10 |
| Testing time | 4 hours |
| Test content outline | 6th edition Test Content Outline (TCO) |
| Passing standard | Criterion-referenced and equated across forms; scaled points are not percentages |
That means your exam preparation should still be built around the BACB sixth-edition Test Content Outline. If you want to test yourself against that outline, use free BCBA practice questions that match the current domains and rationales.
Timeline checklist by your situation
Applying before January 1, 2027
- Confirm you meet the current pathway requirements and have the required coursework and fieldwork documentation.
- Ensure BACB receives your complete, approvable application, payment and all required documents by December 31, 2026 for review under the current requirements.
- Prepare using the current sixth-edition Test Content Outline and check examination notices before scheduling.
- Schedule your Pearson VUE appointment after you receive authorization.
Applying January 1, 2027 or later
- Verify that you qualify through Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 only.
- For Pathway 2, confirm the 315-hour allocation with your program contact. For Pathway 1, verify the applicable accreditation or recognition requirements.
- If using concentrated supervised fieldwork, confirm the 7.5% supervision requirement with your supervisor.
- Use the 2027 Monthly and Final Fieldwork forms if required for your application date.
- Study for the same 6th edition Test Content Outline exam.
Mid-fieldwork candidates
- Identify the application date you are targeting. The rules in effect on that date determine what you must meet.
- Review your accrued fieldwork hours and the corresponding verification forms. Hours earned under current rules may still apply if they meet the requirements for your application date; confirm with the BACB.
- Check whether your percentage of fieldwork hours supervised within each monthly supervisory period needs to change if you switch from current concentrated supervision to the 2027 7.5% requirement.
- Do not delay exam preparation for a "new" exam. The exam remains on the 6th edition Test Content Outline.
Key dates
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| January 1, 2027 | BCBA eligibility and maintenance requirements change. Pathways 3 and 4 are discontinued; coursework and fieldwork rules are revised. The ethics CEU definition had already expanded in March 2025. |
| January 1, 2028 | Pathway 2 Program Contacts must be affiliated with an educational institution located in a country within the BACB’s jurisdiction. |
| January 1, 2029 | Pathway 1 degree equivalency requirements are added for international applicants. |
| January 1, 2032 | Pathway 2 ends. Pathway 1 becomes the only BCBA eligibility pathway and requires an accredited university training program. |
If you are unsure which rules apply to your specific coursework, fieldwork, or application timing, contact the BACB directly. Do not rely on third-party summaries, including this one, for a final eligibility determination.

Frequently asked questions
The January 2027 eligibility announcement is separate from the sixth-edition exam outline introduced in January 2025. The current examination has 185 questions within four hours. Check BACB examination notices when scheduling rather than treating eligibility changes as a new exam edition.
They apply by your BCBA certification application date. If you apply before January 1, 2027, you generally follow current requirements. If you apply on or after January 1, 2027, you follow the 2027 requirements. The date you actually take the exam does not determine which eligibility rules apply. For current-requirements review, BACB must receive the complete, approvable application, payment and all required documents by December 31, 2026; simply starting the application is insufficient.
It depends on when you submit your BCBA application. Hours accrued under current rules may still count if they meet the requirements in effect on your application date. You should confirm with the BACB how your verified hours and fieldwork forms transfer, especially if you are using concentrated supervised fieldwork. For current-requirements review, BACB must receive the complete, approvable application, payment and all required documents by December 31, 2026; simply starting the application is insufficient.
Pathways 3 and 4 are discontinued for BCBA applications submitted January 1, 2027 or later. Candidates who would have used those pathways must instead qualify through Pathway 1 or Pathway 2.
The 315-hour coursework table applies to Pathway 2. The total is retained with a revised allocation; Pathway 1 follows its own accredited/recognized-program requirements. Review the applicable pathway in the official document.
Pathway 2 ends January 1, 2032. After that date, Pathway 1 — which will require a degree from an accredited university training program — will be the only BCBA eligibility pathway.
