Best ACT Prep Books for 2026–2027: Check the Edition Before You Buy

The right ACT prep book depends on whether it matches the enhanced ACT. We compared current editions of the official guide and major third-party books by edition year, enhanced-format alignment, and honest drawbacks — no affiliate links.

Section preview 01

Why the edition matters more than the brand

The enhanced ACT is shorter than the legacy test: 50 English questions in 35 minutes, 45 math questions in 50 minutes, 36 reading questions in 40 minutes, with optional science and writing. Math now has four answer choices instead of five, and science no longer affects the composite. A book published for the 2023 or 2024 test will still teach useful grammar and algebra, but its timing tables, pacing advice, and practice-test scoring will be off.

Editorial fact-check. All factual claims in this article were verified against ACT's official publications on October 1–2, 2026. This is an editorial fact-check, not an expert review.

A good ACT prep book can save you weeks of guessing. A mismatched one can teach you the wrong pacing, the wrong number of answer choices, or the wrong way to score yourself. This guide compares current ACT prep books for the enhanced format, with one rule first: check the edition before the brand.

Before trusting any book, run the same audit we describe in our guide to using old ACT materials for the enhanced ACT: confirm the edition year, look for an explicit enhanced-ACT or current-format statement, check the practice-test provenance, and find the errata page if one exists. Then decide whether the book is worth buying, borrowing, or skipping.

The official books

ACT publishes two tiers of official books through Wiley: the annual Official ACT Prep Guide and a set of subject guides. These are the only books that contain real ACT questions, because ACT owns the test.

The Official ACT Prep Guide 2026–2027

 • Current edition: 2026–2027 (Wiley, April 2026).
 • Format alignment: Explicitly labeled for the enhanced ACT; four practice tests “that reflect the Enhanced ACT experience.”
 • What is inside: Four full-length authentic ACT tests, all including the optional writing test, plus answer explanations from ACT.
 • Overlap note: The same forms appear to correspond to ACT’s free Practice Tests 1–4 on its official test-prep page. If you are already using the free online tests, buying the book mainly gets you the printed explanations and a paper format.
 • List price observed: $39.95 at Barnes & Noble and other retailers (checked 2026-10-01).
 • Best for: Students who want real ACT questions and official answer explanations in one place.
 • Honest drawback: Four tests is a finite set, and some may duplicate the free online forms.

Official ACT Subject Guides, 3rd Edition

 • Current edition: 2026–2027 third editions for English, math, reading, and science.
 • Format alignment: Marketed as “brand new guides for 2026–2027” with current test information and online question banks.
 • What is inside: Subject-specific strategies, official questions, and one-year access to an online question bank per guide.
 • Best for: Students who need concentrated help in one section and want official questions organized by concept.
 • Honest drawback: Buying all four plus the main guide is expensive; start with the main guide unless one section is clearly your weakest.

Official is not the same as unlimited. The 2026–2027 guide has four tests, and earlier enhanced-era guides had the same limitation. Pair the book with the free official forms and a clear review log so you do not burn through the material too quickly.

Third-party books compared

Third-party books write their own practice questions and explanations. They can be strong for content review and strategy, but their simulated tests are not official ACT forms. We checked publisher and retailer listings on 2026-10-01. Prices are what we observed; your retailer may differ.

Kaplan ACT Premium Prep, 2nd Edition (2026–2027)

 • Enhanced alignment: Listing says “redesigned material for current ACT changes” and identifies Kaplan as an official ACT teaching partner.
 • Practice: Five full-length Kaplan practice tests, one printed and four online, plus a Qbank and video lessons.
 • Best for: Students who want structured content review with a mix of book and online practice.
 • Honest drawback: These are Kaplan-written tests, not official ACT forms. Check whether the timing and question counts match the enhanced test before relying on the score.

Princeton Review Enhanced ACT Premium Prep, 2027

 • Enhanced alignment: Explicitly branded for the enhanced ACT and includes online-format strategies.
 • Practice: Publisher and retailer listings for the 2027 edition claim seven full-length tests (three in the book, four online).
 • Best for: Students who want a large volume of practice tests and strategy content.
 • Honest drawback: We noticed conflicting practice-test counts across listings for the 2026 edition, with some retailer pages and reader reports disagreeing about how many tests were actually included. Verify the 2027 edition’s stated count against the table of contents or publisher page before buying.

Barron's ACT Study Guide Premium, 2027

 • Enhanced alignment: Listing says “Fully Aligned with the Current ACT” and “New Enhanced ACT,” with content revised for the shorter format and updated pacing.
 • Practice: Six full-length tests (four in the book, two online) and over 2,000 practice questions.
 • Best for: Students who want a dense content-review book with a high question count.
 • Honest drawback: Barron’s questions are often harder and more elaborate than actual ACT questions. Use them for skill building, but confirm your pacing against official forms.

PrepScholar

PrepScholar does not publish a physical ACT prep book. Its ACT product is an online course priced at $397 for the self-paced Complete Online ACT Prep (checked 2026-10-01). The company states it has been “fully redesigned” for the enhanced ACT, with 54 skill lessons and 3,000+ practice questions. Because this is a course and not a book, we cover it in our broader comparison of ACT prep courses and study resources.

How to check a book before buying

Use this checklist for any ACT book you are considering. It is the same audit spirit we recommend in our old-materials guide.

 1. Edition year: Look for 2026, 2027, or 2026–2027 on the cover. Anything labeled 2024 or 2025 may still be describing the legacy test.
 2. Enhanced-format statement: The cover, back cover, or product page should explicitly mention the enhanced ACT, current ACT, or the new shorter format.
 3. Practice-form provenance: Ask whether the tests are official ACT forms or publisher-written simulations. Official forms are listed as “authentic” or “genuine.”
 4. Question counts and timing: Confirm the book uses 50 English / 45 math / 36 reading, with 35 / 50 / 40 minutes. Math should show four answer choices.
 5. Errata page: Search the publisher’s site or the web for “[book title] errata.” If readers are reporting errors and no correction page exists, factor that into your decision.
 6. Return policy: Because practice-test counts and format claims sometimes differ from what arrives, buy from a retailer that lets you return or inspect the contents.

Do not assume a publisher-written “enhanced” test is equivalent to an official ACT form. Simulated tests are useful for pacing and review, but only official forms with their own scoring keys produce a meaningful enhanced-ACT practice score. See our enhanced ACT guide for why every form needs its own key.

Our verdicts with a published method

We score each option on the same five factors we use for resource comparisons such as our ACT prep course comparison, adjusted for books. The weights are: version alignment 30%, sample quality and answer explanations 25%, learning support 20%, total cost 15%, and accessibility/support 10%.

If you can buy only one book, start with the Official ACT Prep Guide 2026–2027 for the realistic practice, then add a third-party book only if you need more content review or extra simulated tests.

Frequently asked questions

Partly. The grammar, math, and reading skills still transfer, but the timing, section lengths, math answer-choice count, and scoring instructions will be wrong. Treat an old book as concept practice, not as a full simulation. See our old-materials audit guide for a keep/verify/replace checklist.

It depends. The free official forms on ACT’s site cover the same practice tests, but the book gives you printed explanations, a paper format, and a single organized resource. If you learn best from paper and want official answer rationales in one place, the book is useful. If you are comfortable with PDFs and online scoring, the free route may be enough.

Quality review matters more than a raw count. Most students benefit from at least two to four full-length timed tests to build stamina and identify weak areas, plus targeted section practice between tests. Four official tests is enough for many students if each one is reviewed thoroughly.

No. Third-party tests can be excellent for skill building, but only official ACT forms match the exact style, difficulty distribution, and scoring logic of the real test. Use third-party books for content review and extra practice, and official forms for realistic benchmarks.

Check the publisher’s website for an errata page first. If none exists, post your suspected error in a student forum or compare it against an official ACT form. Do not let one or two typos derail your prep, but do flag any timing or answer-key mistakes immediately so they do not corrupt your scoring.

Books work well for self-directed students who want paper practice and explanations they can annotate. Online courses add diagnostics, adaptive plans, and video instruction. If you are deciding between formats, see our ACT prep course comparison.
