The fastest way to find out where you stand on the aPHR is to answer real exam-style questions and read why each answer is right. Our free aPHR practice quiz gives you 10 questions pulled straight from our 1,198-question bank — spanning all five functional areas on the HRCI outline — with instant scoring and a full rationale for every item.

This post covers what’s in the free quiz, what the real aPHR exam format looks like per HRCI’s official pages, and how to turn practice questions into a study plan instead of a guessing game. If you want to see how the free questions fit into a complete system, the aPHR exam prep page shows the full structure, and if you’re still deciding whether the aPHR is the right first credential, start with our aPHR vs PHR comparison.

What’s inside the free aPHR practice quiz?

  • 10 real bank questions — actual items from our 1,198-question aPHR bank, not simplified teasers
  • All five functional areas — Compliance & Risk Management, Employee Relations, Talent Acquisition, Compensation & Benefits, and Learning & Development each appear
  • Two question styles — straight knowledge items and workplace situational-judgment scenarios, mirroring the mix the real exam uses
  • Instant scoring — you see right or wrong the moment you answer
  • A full rationale for every question — why the correct answer is correct, plus why each distractor is wrong
  • Runs in your browser — no download, nothing to install

The rationales are the point. An answer key tells you that you missed a question; a rationale that walks through every distractor tells you which specific confusion caused the miss — mixing up an FMLA threshold with an FLSA one, or picking the empathetic-sounding option over the compliant one. That distinction is what makes 10 questions genuinely diagnostic.

What does the real aPHR exam format look like?

Per HRCI’s official certification page, the aPHR delivers 90 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes, plus 30 minutes of administration time. Only 65 of those questions are scored — the other 25 are unscored pretest items HRCI is trialing for future forms, scattered throughout and indistinguishable from the scored ones. Scoring is scaled: results run from 100 to 700, and you need 500 to pass, per HRCI’s Understanding Your Results Report.

Not just multiple choice. The aPHR uses formats beyond the standard four-option item, including drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, and scenario-based sets. Ninety questions in 105 minutes works out to roughly 70 seconds per question — comfortable for recall items, tight for anything you have to read twice and manipulate. Practice pacing before exam day, not on it.

How should you weight your aPHR practice?

The aPHR isn’t evenly weighted, so your practice shouldn’t be either. Per HRCI’s official aPHR Exam Content Outline, Compliance & Risk Management and Employee Relations together carry 49% of the exam — very nearly half. Because pass/fail is determined solely by your total scaled score, not by area-level minimums, every extra correct answer in a heavy area counts exactly as much as one in a light area. There are simply more of them to win.

Then review rationale-first. After each practice block, spend more time reading explanations than you spent answering — including on questions you got right, because a lucky guess is a gap wearing a disguise. Our aPHR pass rate and difficulty breakdown covers where the 29% who fail typically lose their points.

Track misses by cause, not by area. “Confused two legal thresholds,” “fell for the empathetic distractor,” “ran out of time” are fixable patterns. “Weak in Employee Relations” is too vague to act on. Ten rationale-reviewed questions beat fifty answer-key-checked ones.

What does the full aPHR system add after the free quiz?

Ten questions tell you where you stand today; they can’t carry you to a 500. The full PrepSolution aPHR system extends the same question style across 1,198 practice questions tagged to the five functional areas — including the matching and ordering drills that mirror the real exam’s drag-and-drop formats — plus three timed 100-question mock exams for pacing rehearsal and 528 flashcards for the recall layer underneath. Every question carries the same distractor-by-distractor rationale you’ll see in the free quiz. Here’s why candidates choose PrepSolution and how the pieces fit together.

Start with the free 10 first. If you clear seven or more with confident reasoning, you’re ahead of schedule. If you don’t, you just learned exactly which functional areas need the most reps — which is precisely what a first practice session is for.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The quiz gives you 10 real questions from our aPHR bank with instant scoring and a full rationale for every answer. The questions span all five functional areas on the HRCI outline and mix knowledge items with workplace situational-judgment scenarios.

The aPHR has 90 questions total: 65 scored plus 25 unscored pretest items, per HRCI. The pretest questions are scattered throughout and indistinguishable from scored ones, so treat every question as if it counts. You get 1 hour 45 minutes of exam time, plus 30 minutes of administration time.

You need a scaled score of 500 on a 100 to 700 scale, per HRCI’s Understanding Your Results Report. Pass or fail is determined solely by your total scaled score, not by minimum performance in each functional area, so strength in the heavily weighted areas can offset weakness elsewhere.

No. Beyond standard four-option multiple choice, the aPHR uses drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, and scenario-based question sets. That is why pacing matters: 90 questions in 105 minutes is about 70 seconds per question, which gets tight on items that require reading a scenario and manipulating answer elements.

Match the official Exam Content Outline weights: Compliance and Risk Management 25%, Employee Relations 24%, Talent Acquisition 19%, Compensation and Benefits 17%, and Learning and Development 15%. The top two areas carry 49% of the exam, so roughly half your practice questions should come from them.

HRCI publishes no official number, so ignore anyone who names one. What matters is coverage and accuracy: drill all five areas in proportion to their weights, read the rationale on every miss until the underlying confusion is fixed, and keep going until your weighted practice accuracy sits comfortably above passing level — not at it.
