Why this book

One body of knowledge. Three exams.

There is one HR body of knowledge and three exams that test it at rising depth. The aPHR proves you know the field, the PHR proves you can do it, and the SPHR proves you can lead it.

01

Tier-marked, not triplicated

251 aPHR, PHR, and SPHR markers run through every chapter and tell you exactly which parts your exam tests, so you study one book at your depth: Learn it for the aPHR, Do it for the PHR, Lead it for the SPHR.

02

The law, turned into pictures

Protected classes, the four-fifths screen, and the magic thresholds: 15 employees for Title VII, 20 for the ADEA, 50 employees within 75 miles for FMLA, 1.5x for overtime. Each drawn as a page you can read in seconds.

03

The math, worked to the answer

119 worked examples run the numbers on the page: compa-ratio, range penetration, and the four-fifths screen, each carried through real figures to the answer instead of being left as an exercise.

Built to be read

Who it is for

Built for every rung of the ladder

One volume, three credentials. Wherever you stand on the HRCI ladder, the book meets you there.

  • The aPHR starter

No HR experience required, and the exam expects none. The Foundational tier walks you through the field from the first page, and chapter 1 tells you exactly what the aPHR asks.

  • The PHR candidate

The working professional’s rung. The Do it tier keeps you at Professional depth across the whole lifecycle, from workforce planning to the bargaining table.

  • The SPHR leader

Strategy and judgment at the top rung. The Lead it tier marks the Strategic layer the SPHR tests: reading the business, leading change, and owning risk.

  • The career switcher

Coming to HR from another field? One volume teaches the whole body of knowledge in order, and the credential ladder in chapter 1 shows you where to step on.

  • The visual learner

286 diagram plates in one consistent hand and 200 fact panels. Maslow, the nine-box, the four-fifths screen, drawn once and kept.

  • The team certifying together

One book covers every rung, so an HR department can study from one consistent source whether each member sits the aPHR, the PHR, or the SPHR.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about HRCI Essentials.

About the Book

All three. HRCI Essentials covers the aPHR, PHR, and SPHR in one volume, with 251 tier markers telling you which parts your credential tests. Chapter 1 compares the exams so you can choose: the aPHR has 65 scored items in 1 hour 45 minutes and requires no HR experience, the PHR has 90 scored items in 2 hours, and the SPHR has 115 scored items in 2 hours 30 minutes. All three pass at a scaled 500 on a 100-to-700 scale.

HRCI Essentials is not sold separately. It ships inside every aPHR, PHR, and SPHR Complete Pass System plan alongside the adaptive QBank, the timed mocks, and the flashcards. Choose the bundle for your exam and the full book is included.

It is drawn, not transcribed: 286 diagram plates carry the frameworks, 119 worked examples run the math through real numbers to the answer, and 251 tier markers tell you which parts the aPHR, PHR, and SPHR each test, so one book serves all three credentials without triplicating a page.

A print-ready digital PDF: A4, 461 pages, designed at 300 DPI. Print the chapters you are working on, annotate on a tablet, or read on any screen.

No. The book is the teaching half of the system: 461 pages that explain, draw, and work the content. The practice lives right next to it in your bundle, in the adaptive QBank, the timed mock exams, and the flashcards that ship in every Complete Pass System plan.

Yes. It is built on the current HRCI Exam Content Outlines: the 2021 aPHR outline and the 2024 PHR and SPHR outlines. Exam content, eligibility, and scoring are set by HRCI, so always confirm the latest requirements at hrci.org.
