2026 BASK Sub-competencies
this entire section is new, merged from two former competenciesConnecting I&D to Performance
Demonstrating how inclusive practices drive measurable business results
Fostering Inclusive Culture
Creating environments where diverse perspectives are actively sought and valued
Mitigating Unconscious Bias
Recognizing and reducing affinity, confirmation, attribution, and halo/horn biases
Supporting ERGs
Championing Employee Resource Groups as strategic business partners, not social clubs
Applying a Global Lens
Integrating cross-cultural awareness into every inclusion initiative
Equity vs Equality
Equity (giving people what they need) is distinct from equality (giving everyone the same thing)
Equity
Allocates resources based on individual need. Acknowledges that different people start from different places. Aims for fair outcomes, not identical treatment.
Equality
Gives everyone the same resources regardless of circumstance. Sounds fair on the surface but can reinforce existing disparities when starting points differ.
Unconscious Bias Types
Affinity Bias
Favoring people who are similar to you in background, interests, or appearance
Confirmation Bias
Seeking information that confirms what you already believe and ignoring contradicting evidence
Attribution Bias
Attributing your own success to skill but others' success to luck, and vice versa for failures
Halo/Horn Effect
Letting one positive trait (halo) or negative trait (horn) color your entire perception of a person

New Combined Competency for 2026
This competency merges the former domestic Inclusion & Diversity competency with Global Mindset into one unified framework. Expect questions that require you to apply both domestic inclusion principles AND cross-cultural awareness in the same scenario.
Equity Does NOT Mean Equality
Equity means giving people what they individually need to succeed. Equality means giving everyone the exact same thing. The exam will present scenarios where treating everyone identically actually creates unfair outcomes.
SJIs Require Both Domestic AND Global Thinking
Because this competency merged two former ones, situational judgment items may test your ability to handle inclusion domestically while also considering cross-cultural dimensions. Do not default to a purely domestic lens.
Merged Competency
Two former competencies became one in 2026. Study both domestic I&D and global mindset together.
Belonging Is the Outcome
Diversity is the mix. Inclusion is making the mix work. Belonging is when people feel they are home.
Equality means giving every customer the same size 9 shoe. Simple, fast, and completely ignores the fact that people have different feet. Some will be fine. Many will not.
Equity means measuring each person's foot and giving them the right size. It takes more effort. It requires more resources. But everyone actually walks out of the store comfortable.
Belonging means the store was designed so every person feels like it was built for them. The lighting, the seating, the staff, the inventory all signal "you are supposed to be here."
