The Step-by-Step SJI Approach
Read the full scenario before looking at answer choices. Identify the SHRM competency being tested. Eliminate wrong-answer patterns (over-tactical, single-stakeholder, reactive, delegating). Select the answer that passes the boardroom test. Summarize your reasoning in 2-3 executive-level sentences before selecting. If you can't justify it to a board, it's probably not the SCP answer.
Time Management and Wrong-Answer Patterns
With 110 minutes per section, time management is a strategic skill. Spend no more than 90 seconds per SJI. If two answers seem equally strong, pick the more proactive, multi-stakeholder, sustainable option. Common wrong-answer patterns fall into four categories that you can now recognize from 39 topics of study. Over-tactical solves the symptom. Single-stakeholder optimizes for one party. Reactive waits for the crisis. Delegating abdicates the strategic seat you earned.
you made it through all 40 topics. now prove it.
Full-length SJI practice with detailed rationales for every answer choice. Apply the framework from Topic 01 through Topic 40.

the four patterns that cost pointsOver-tactical when strategic is required
The scenario demands enterprise-level thinking and you pick the answer that fixes the immediate problem. Every SJI at the SCP level asks you to think beyond the presenting issue to the systemic cause and the sustainable solution.
Single-stakeholder when multiple are affected
The trap answer optimizes for one party (the employee, the manager, the CEO). The SCP answer balances the interests of all affected stakeholders while prioritizing the enterprise objective.
Reactive when proactive is available
Responding to the crisis after it unfolds instead of building the system that prevents recurrence. The SCP answer addresses the immediate situation AND establishes the infrastructure to prevent it from happening again.
Delegating when advising is expected
Recommending that someone else handle it ("escalate to legal," "defer to the CEO") when the scenario positions you as the strategic HR leader. You are at the table. The SCP advises, recommends, and acts.
Strategic SJI Angle
This IS the capstone. Apply the Strategic Choice Framework from Topic 01 to every scenario. Enterprise objective at risk? Highest-downside stakeholder? 6 to 12 month sustainability? Ethics, risk, and execution balance? You have studied 40 topics of strategic HR leadership. Every SJI on exam day is a chance to prove you think like the CHRO the organization needs.
The Boardroom Test
If you cannot summarize your reasoning in 2 to 3 executive-level sentences, you probably selected the wrong answer.
The Four Questions
Enterprise objective at risk? Highest-downside stakeholder? 6 to 12 month sustainability? Ethics, risk, and execution balance? Run this for every SJI.
Every pilot runs the same checklist before every flight. It does not matter if they have flown 10,000 hours. The checklist prevents errors that experience alone cannot catch. The SCP runs the same 4-question framework for every SJI regardless of topic.
The pilot reads every instrument, not just the ones that look concerning. Read the entire SJI scenario before looking at answer choices. Context buried in the second sentence often changes the entire analysis.
The pilot identifies the type of situation (weather, mechanical, traffic) to apply the right procedure. Identify which SHRM competency or behavioral indicator the SJI is testing. This narrows the correct answer framework.
The pilot eliminates unsafe options before committing to the best course of action. Eliminate over-tactical, single-stakeholder, reactive, and delegating answers. Select the answer you could justify to a board of directors in 2 to 3 sentences.
