This checklist covers US national ACT testing using official guidance checked October 3, 2026. For school-day, international or accommodated testing, follow your specific appointment instructions. Download the one-page checklist (PDF) before packing; no email is required.
The Enhanced ACT format guide explains how optional sections affect the appointment. This checklist is a free planning resource from PrepSolution ACT prep.
The night before: documents and route
- Review your confirmed test center, arrival time and optional sections. Plan travel and a reasonable delay buffer.
- Put your acceptable original photo ID with your printed admission ticket. Follow ACT’s identification guidance if you need its student identification form.
- Check any approved accommodation instructions and use the equipment permitted for your appointment.
- Lay out comfortable layers and arrange a pickup plan that allows for check-in, breaks and optional sections.
Pack for the format you booked
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Identification and ticket | Use ACT-accepted identification; print your latest admission ticket and check its details. A ticket does not replace ID. |
| Writing supplies | Bring sharpened No. 2 pencils and erasers for national testing. Avoid mechanical pencils and pens. |
| Calculator | Check the permitted model and settings; bring it charged or with working batteries. It is for Math only. |
| Timing device | Use only a permitted device without an alarm. Follow staff instructions about where it must stay. |
| Online device | For BYOD, complete setup beforehand and bring the approved charged laptop and charger. For center-provided online testing, confirm the center’s instructions. |
| Break supplies | Pack a snack and water for the permitted break area, and follow staff directions. |
Use the ACT calculator guide for model restrictions and the online-versus-paper guide for practice setup. Do not assume a tablet, Chromebook or another personal device will be accepted: consult ACT’s current online testing instructions before choosing BYOD.
What stays out of the testing session
Personal notes, outside scratch paper and unauthorized aids should stay at home. Phones, smartwatches and other prohibited electronics must remain off and out of sight as instructed, including during breaks. If you use an approved support, follow its specific rules. Check ACT’s complete test-day rules rather than relying on another student’s experience.
At check-in and during breaks
Give yourself time to find the correct room and follow staff directions. If something about your registration or equipment seems wrong, raise it before testing starts. A printed ticket helps staff match your record; missing a ticket can delay processing, while unacceptable ID can prevent admission. Stay in the supervised area during breaks and follow restrictions on electronic devices.
A calm final review
The evening before the test is a useful time to revisit two or three recurring mistakes from your error log. Avoid using an unfamiliar full-length test as a last-minute verdict on your preparation. Set your materials aside, confirm the route, and leave room for normal rest. If anxiety is interfering with daily life or test access, speak with a trusted adult or appropriate professional rather than relying on a study checklist alone.
After the appointment
Check the initial score-release calendar for your test mode. The first listed release date is not a guarantee for every student. Once scores arrive, read the section breakdown and use the retake decision guide if another sitting would serve your goals.
