As of June 3, 2026, the SHRM-SCP exam costs $350 (member) or $450 (nonmember) at the early-bird rate, and $399 (member) or $499 (nonmember) at the standard rate. SHRM charges one combined fee for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP, so the sticker price is identical for both credentials — per SHRM’s Exam Options and Fees page, verified June 13, 2026. Every rate already bakes in a $50 nonrefundable application fee, and the standard rate adds a second $49 nonrefundable charge for applying after the early-bird cutoff.
That headline number is the easy part. The harder question — the one that actually drains a budget — is everything orbiting it: membership math, a missed-deadline penalty, retake fees, results reviews, and a three-year recertification bill most candidates forget exists. If you’re building a study budget alongside your SHRM-SCP practice exam prep, this is the full accounting, with each figure tied to SHRM’s own 2026 sources.
One note before the numbers: SHRM cut its certification fees on June 3, 2026. Older blog posts (and even the printed 2026 Certification Handbook) still quote higher figures. We flag where that matters so you don’t over-budget against stale prices.
How much does the SHRM-SCP cost in 2026?
In 2026 the SHRM-SCP exam costs $350 (member) or $450 (nonmember) at the early-bird rate, and $399 (member) or $499 (nonmember) at the standard rate — down from the single $595/$695 fee SHRM charged in 2025, before the June 3, 2026 pricing reset.
There are four exam prices, and which one you pay depends on two things only: whether you hold a current SHRM membership, and whether you apply before the early-bird deadline. Here is the full grid as listed on SHRM’s live fee page.
| Rate | SHRM member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| Early bird (apply by deadline) | $350 | $450 |
| Standard (after early bird) | $399 | $499 |
SHRM also publishes discounted tiers for specific candidates: military rates run $320 early-bird / $420 nonmember and $369 / $469 standard, and student rates are $150 / $250 early-bird and $199 / $299 standard. Employers testing teams get corporate volume pricing that drops from $374 per exam (5–9 exams) to $299 per exam (40–47 exams). For the typical working HR professional, though, the four-cell table above is the one that applies.
SHRM charges the same fee for the SHRM-CP and the SHRM-SCP. The credentials differ in eligibility and exam content, not price — so the cost is never the reason to pick one over the other.
What is hidden inside the exam fee?
The price isn’t one charge — it’s a bundle. SHRM states verbatim that “early bird exam rates include a $50 nonrefundable application fee,” and that “standard exam rates include a $50 nonrefundable application fee and $49 nonrefundable standard deadline fee.” That second line is the whole reason the standard rate is exactly $49 higher than early bird ($399 − $350, and $499 − $450).
In plain terms: applying after the early-bird window doesn’t buy you anything extra. You pay $49 more for the privilege of applying later, and $50 of whatever you pay never comes back even if your plans change. Budget the early-bird rate, then treat the $49 gap as a self-imposed late penalty you can avoid by submitting your application on time.
When is the SHRM-SCP early-bird deadline for 2026?
For the testing window that runs December 1, 2026 through February 15, 2027, the early-bird application period is June 3 through August 31, 2026. Standard applications for the same window open September 1 and close December 24, 2026. SHRM notes that all application deadlines close at 11:59 PM ET — so an application started at 11:58 on the cutoff date still counts, and one started at 12:01 the next morning costs you $49.
| Milestone | Date (Window 2) |
|---|---|
| Early-bird applications open | June 3, 2026 |
| Early-bird deadline | Aug 31, 2026 (11:59 PM ET) |
| Standard applications | Sept 1 – Dec 24, 2026 |
| Testing window | Dec 1, 2026 – Feb 15, 2027 |
Is SHRM membership worth it for the exam discount?
Not on the exam alone. SHRM Professional membership is $299 a year, and the member discount on the exam is exactly $100 ($450 − $350 at early bird, or $499 − $399 at standard). Spend $299 to save $100 and you’re $199 behind. The discount does not pay for the membership.
Membership can still make sense — for the recertification discount, the PDC resources, and the professional network — but treat those as the reason you join, not the exam savings. If your employer reimburses membership, the calculus flips entirely and you should take the member rate. We walk through the same member-versus-nonmember tradeoff for the associate credential in our guide to SHRM-CP exam costs, and the $299-membership figure is identical across both.
You must already be a SHRM member at the moment you submit your application to get member pricing. Joining after you apply does not retroactively discount the exam — SHRM’s handbook is explicit on the timing.
Is the SHRM application fee refundable?
No. The $50 application fee is nonrefundable, and SHRM’s 2026 Certification Handbook states that all certification fees are nonrefundable, with case-by-case exceptions only for documented medical or personal emergencies. Candidates who simply don’t show up forfeit the entire exam fee.
That policy is why the deadlines above matter so much. There’s no “change of plans” refund. If you need to move, SHRM offers paid options instead: a one-time Transfer Fee of $150 to shift to the next window, a one-time Reset Fee of $100 within a window, and Prometric reschedule fees of $45 (30+ days out) or $60 (5–29 days out). Inside five days of your appointment, no changes are allowed at all.
How much does it cost to retake the SHRM-SCP?
You pay the full exam fee again. SHRM’s handbook states that candidates who want to retest must “apply as a new candidate in the next window or a future testing window, which includes remittance of the full examination fee.” There is no retake discount and no failed-candidate rate — a second attempt costs the same $350–$499 a first attempt does, depending on your membership and timing.
Two policies soften the blow. You can’t test for the same exam twice in one window, but there’s no limit on how many windows you can reapply across. And if you didn’t pass, you can request a Test-Results Review for $100 within 30 days of getting your official results — though SHRM cautions that score changes are extraordinarily rare and that none have occurred in the last eight years. We’d save the $100 and put it toward another round of practice instead. If a retake is on the table, our SHRM-SCP retake plan maps out a focused comeback.
What is the total cost of getting and keeping SHRM-SCP?
The exam is the entry fee, not the lifetime cost. The credential lasts three years, then you recertify by earning 60 Professional Development Credits or retaking the exam. SHRM’s recertification processing fee is $165 for members and $210 for nonmembers per cycle. Miss the cycle deadline and submit during the 60-day grace period, and the late fee rises to $240 (member) or $285 (nonmember) — exactly $75 more than the on-time fee. Fail to recertify within the grace period and the credential is revoked.
Here’s a realistic first-three-years estimate for a member who passes on the first try, plus a self-study prep line for context.
| Cost item | Member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| Exam (early bird) | $350 | $450 |
| SHRM membership (year 1) | $299 | — |
| Recertification (year 3) | $165 | $210 |
| 3-year subtotal (excl. prep) | $814 | $660 |
Note the quirk: a nonmember’s three-year subtotal is lower because they skip the $299 membership — paying it only nets out if the recertification discount, PDC tools, and network are worth it to you. On the prep side, SHRM’s own self-study Certification Prep System (online only) runs $820 for members and $1,130 for nonmembers with 18-month access and 2,700+ practice questions, which can cost more than the exam itself. Cheaper, sharper question banks exist; our SHRM Learning System alternatives compares them, and you can see how PrepSolution’s adaptive approach targets your weak domains instead of charging you to re-read content you already know.
Always recertify before your cycle deadline. The grace-period fee is $75 higher in both member and nonmember tiers, and letting the grace period lapse revokes the credential — meaning you’d have to sit (and pay for) the exam all over again.
Did SHRM-SCP fees change in 2026?
Yes, and downward. In 2025, the SHRM-SCP carried a single fee of $595 (member) / $695 (nonmember) with no early-bird rate. The June 3, 2026 reset introduced early-bird pricing and lowered the standard rate, so a member applying early now pays $350 — $245 less than the 2025 member fee of $595. Compared standard-rate to standard-rate against the early-2026 handbook ($595 member), members save $196; compared early-bird to early-bird against the handbook’s short-lived $520 early-bird rate, the saving is $170.
The practical takeaway: ignore any source quoting $520/$620 or $595/$695 as a current SHRM-SCP price. Those were real, but they were superseded on June 3, 2026. The printed handbook still shows the old figures, so when the handbook and the live fee page disagree on price, the live page wins. For everything else — eligibility, deadlines, retake rules — the handbook remains the authority, and our SHRM-SCP eligibility requirements for 2026 covers whether you even qualify before you spend a dollar.

Frequently asked questions
As of June 3, 2026, the SHRM-SCP costs $350 (member) or $450 (nonmember) at the early-bird rate, and $399 (member) or $499 (nonmember) at the standard rate. SHRM charges the same combined fee for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.
No. The $50 application fee is nonrefundable, and SHRM’s 2026 Certification Handbook states that all certification fees are nonrefundable, with case-by-case exceptions only for documented medical or personal emergencies. No-shows forfeit the entire exam fee.
Not for the exam alone. SHRM Professional membership is $299 per year, but the member exam discount is only $100, so the discount does not cover the membership cost. Membership can still pay off through the recertification discount, PDC resources, and network.
For the testing window running December 1, 2026 through February 15, 2027, the early-bird application deadline is August 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET. Standard applications for that window run September 1 through December 24, 2026.
A retake costs the full exam fee again — $350 to $499 depending on membership and timing — because SHRM requires retesters to apply as new candidates. There is no retake discount and no limit on reapplications, but you cannot test for the same exam twice in one window.
The credential lasts three years, then you recertify by earning 60 PDCs or retaking the exam. The recertification processing fee is $165 for members and $210 for nonmembers; submitting late during the 60-day grace period costs $75 more in each tier ($240 member / $285 nonmember).
